Mindfulness Monday: Mandala Painting

Thank you to my colleague, Christine Lord, for introducing me to Mandala painting. In Sanskrit, Mandala means “circle” and the art represents the symmetry of the universe. It reminds us that everything is interconnected and it is a peaceful way to decrease negativity in our lives. We tried it out today and it was a hit! We used circle-shaped paper, acrylic paint, Q-tips, and toothpicks and then followed this video as a guide:

After:

I was so pleased with the finished products! A few students commented that this was her favorite activity so far this year.

Have you ever tried Mandala painting either on your own or as a classroom activity?

Note: Next time, I will make sure all the circles have a black background since that produces the best result and I’ll tell the students to put their names on the back before they paint. I’m so grateful for the student feedback I received after this activity!

  1. Oh my goodness! I love that you were able to incorporate this into your classes! I started using creativity as a way of centering myself during the infamous “lockdown” of 2020. I had forgotten how much I enjoy taking a few minutes to be creative, but it turned into so much more. Drawing, painting, etc. is a great way to be present in the moment!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
