Despite the scientific research to back up the benefits of mindfulness, people are still very reluctant to adopt a daily mindfulness practice. Here are the common reasons I have heard. Comment below and let me know what is holding you back!
- Time- The most common reason I hear from people for not adopting a mindfulness practice is that they don’t have enough time. I understand this one because I also felt that way before I embraced my own mindfulness practice. However, once I began my day with a 5-10 minute meditation I saw a huge increase in my productivity. When I take a few minutes to do anything mindful, the quality of my day improves and I find that I am far more effective at completing tasks. I also enjoy them more and I even find my self say things like, “I get to drive the kids to practice.” I used to think it was silly to think like that but it is actually true.
- BS- Many people have told me that they believe mindfulness is a bunch of BS. I don’t judge them for saying that because I used to feel the same way. It seems silly to believe something so simple could have such a monumental effect on your life but I can attest that it does.
- Woo-woo- This term makes me giggle every time I say it but I know many people believe mindfulness belongs in the category with conjuring spirits and spell casting. Since every individual makes mindfulness their own, this “witchy” behavior might be your thing but it does not define the term mindfulness. Mindfulness is simply that act of noticing. Each individual gives their practice life so an activity is no longer mindful if it compromises your beliefs.
These are the top three reasons I have heard for why people are reluctant to practice mindfulness. Please share what’s holding you back.
